VCAL students hosted a Trade Mental Health & Wellbeing Event on Thursday 15th October in the Trade Training Centre. Guest speakers delivered important messages to over 90 budding young tradies about the need to look after themselves and their mates when it comes to both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Jeremy Forbes from HALT (Hope, Assistance, Local Tradies) talked about his 20 years in the construction industry, the many mates he’s lost to suicide, and the inspiration behind forming HALT.
“Talk to your mates,” he urged students. “The pain of regret is much worse than the pain of hard work. You just need to be there to listen – you don’t need to have all the answers.”
VET Building and Construction teacher David Jacob spoke openly about his own struggles with mental health as a young tradie, while Jim Johnstone from Incolink gave some tips on dealing with the peaks and troughs of employment in the construction industry.
Following the presentations everyone enjoyed a barbecue prepared by students with all proceeds going to the work of HALT.
